What to expect
At your first appointment, which typically lasts 75-90 minutes, you can expect a thorough intake covering your medical history and current health concerns. This appointment includes a traditional pulse reading and may include an abdominal palpation, physical exam, and/or orthopedic muscle tests when indicated. This in-depth process helps provide the foundation for a solid understanding of your healthcare needs, including short- and long-term strategies to address any current symptoms and underlying causes.
Many people find that their first acupuncture treatment can be quite powerful; for this reason, acupuncture at the first session usually involves fewer needles and a shorter amount of time. This also gives a baseline for the relative strength or subtlety of the individual's response to acupuncture and helps the practitioner evaluate treatment strategies for follow-up visits.
At your second visit, you'll get an overview of your treatment plan and strategies and have an opportunity to ask any questions. In addition to acupuncture treatments, your treatment plan may incorporate Chinese herbal medicine, lifestyle suggestions, and dietary recommendations.
